Does the reigning Super Bowl MVP even vote?
Taking Fourth Estate 48 to the 24th state for today's public records story.
Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP for the Kansas City Chiefs, and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, have become a power couple in both sports and pop culture. Recently, the couple sparked conversations online when discussing former President Donald Trump and voting.
The elite QB was even asked if he would endorse Trump, as his wife supposedly supports the Republican nominee who will face VP Kamala Harris in November.
Instead of endorsing a candidate, Mahomes elected to refrain from putting his support behind a nominee and instead encouraged others to register to vote.
"I think my place is to inform people to get registered to vote, to inform people to do their own research and then make their best decision for them and their family," Mahomes said last week.
Mahomes even helped voting efforts for Missourians in 2020 by footing the bill to allow the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium to act as a vote center during the pandemic.
However, a look into his actual voter registration shows there are no public records indicating that he is currently registered to vote in his home state, according to the Missouri Secretary of State's Office and Cass County where his family resides in a mansion.
“Our office does not possess a voter registration for Patrick Mahomes,” Deputy Chief of Staff Scott Clark told Fourth Estate 48.
It also appears his wife, Brittany (nee Matthews) is not registered to vote in Missouri either despite Trump praising her and tying her to the MAGA movement. The office said via email that neither “Brittany Mahomes” nor “Brittany Matthews” appeared in their voter registration database.
It’s worth noting that Brittany Mahomes has not verbally (or otherwise) endorsed Trump, but instead liked an Instagram post regarding his political platform that received a lot of media attention and scrutiny.
The Mahomes duo can still register to vote until October 9 in Missouri and if you’re reading this in Arizona but not registered to vote, you can do so here until Oct 7.
Interestingly, fellow Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce, who has become as much of a household name as Mahomes especially since coupling up with Taylor Swift1, does appear to be registered to vote in Missouri. Kelce’s information did come back as “inactive,” since he appeared to skip the 2022 election after voting in 2020. It does not show his party affiliation though. Perhaps Swift’s political chops will be enough to convince him to activate his voter status before the deadline so he can cast a vote for those on the ballot.
